78th Annual Meeting
 Allentown, PA
April 21, 2007


The 78th Annual Meeting was called to order with President Amanda Valko presiding.  Roll Call was answered by the following chapters: Allegheny #1, Forks of the Delaware #14, John Shrader #21, Ohio Valley #22, Westmoreland #23, Bald Eagle #24, Cumberland Valley #27, Conejohela #28, North Fork #29.  A quorum was present.

The minutes of the last Annual Meeting were accepted as distributed on a motion by Ken Burkett, seconded by Paul Nevin.  PASSED

Treasurer’s Report, Budget, Grant Report and Elmer Erb reports (written and verbal) were presented at the April 20th Board of Directors.  A summary was presented to the membership.  The Society is solvent and the Elmer Erb Permanent Fund was profitable.

Committee Reports:

Annual Meeting—Mary Alice Graetzer offer our thanks to the Forks of the Delaware for hosting the meeting.  She announced the hosts for future meetings.
2008 hosted by North Fork Chapter #29 at the Holiday Inn in Clarion, April 4-6, 2008
2009 hosted by the BHP in the Harrisburg Area—80th Annual Meeting
2010 hosted by Westmoreland Chapter #23 in the Greensburg Area

Archaeology Month—Amanda Valko, chairperson reported that the SPA Education Committee has been working with the SPA/PAC Archaeology Month Committee to coordinate efforts.  The poster is at the printer and an early mailing is anticipated.

Awards Committee—Catherine Spohn reported that the awards were ready for the banquet.  No nominations for the Sharader George Youth Award.  Noel Strattan will be reported the number of sites from the PASS files on a calendar year basis.  Members are asked to report their chapter when recording sites.  Guidelines for a Lifetime Achievement Award will be developed and brought back to the board.

ESAF representative—Amanda announced the meeting is to be held this November in Burlington, VT.  Announcements for Call for Papers are in the SPA Newsletter and on the website as well as meeting information and contacts.

Jocob L Grimm C-14 Committee—Jim Herbsritt reported that applications were received for this year.  The award will be presented at the Banquet.  The C-14 reports are published in the SPA Newsletter. 

PAC Representative—Paul Raber reported on the PAC activities.  There will be money available for non-transportation sites C-14 dating grants from PAC.  Contact information is as follows: Grant funds include $2500 for standard or AMS dates from any site in Pennsylvania. Publications—The journal is on time and on budget.  Manuscripts for Spring 2008 are being accepted.  The SPA Newsletter will be getting a new look in 2008.  If you have suggestions of want to help, contact the Secretary. 

Site Survey—Noel Strattan reported on the annual recording of sites in Pennsylvania and the new PASS forms.  The forms will be available online with links from the SPA site.  The numbers will be tallied on the calendar year.  SPA members are asked to designate their chapter on the forms when recording sites for credit toward the Frances Dorrance award.

Collections and Curation Committee—Steve Warfel will be retiring from The State Museum in June.  He has resigned as chair of this committee with a recommendation that the Society fund a new printing of the “Discover and Preserve” brochure.  This item was funded at the board meeting.  No replacement was named at this time.  The committee served as a public contact for the state and the society in issues relating to private collections and curation of materials from Pennsylvania sites.  The Society thanks Steve for his service and offers best wishes for his retirement.

Education Committee—Mary Miles reported the activities of the committee are ongoing with cooperative work with both SPA and PAC Archaeology Month committees.  Educational materials will be developed with plans for children’s activities, curriculum and speakers lists. 

Chapter Reports: Summary will be published in the Fall Newsletter

A motion was made by Mary Miles and seconded by Catherine Spohn to ratify the actions of the Board of Directors of the Society for the past year.  PASSED

A motion to close the Ballot made by Ken Burkett and seconded by Doug Stine.  PASSED

The Secretary was directed to cast the ballot as presented.

Ken Burkett, Mary Miles and Bob Oshnock are planning a bus trip to Cahokia on the 3rd weekend of September.  Contact them for information.

Jefferson County History Center will be hosting the “Native American Lifeways” exhibit.  Ken Burkett reports that the exhibit will be at the center during the 2008 Annual Meeting.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:50 am.
