77th Annual Meeting
Washington, PA May 6, 2006 The 77th Annual Meeting of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology was called to order by President, Amanda Valko-Fritz at 8:05 am. The following chapters were represented: Allegheny #1, Forks of the Delaware #14, Somerset #20, John Shrader #21, Ohio Valley #22, Westmoreland #23, Bald Eagle #24, French Creek #26, Cumberland Valley #27, Conejohela #28, North Fork #29. A quorum was present. The minutes from the previous Annual Meeting were accepted as distributed on a motion by Ken Burkett and Seconded by Verna Cowin. PASSED Treasurer’s Report—A written and verbal report was given by Paul Cowin showing the current status and the projected 2006 budget. A letter of audit from Al Moore was provided to the Secretary to record. Amanda Valko reported that she is working on a new grant application from PHMC. The budget and spending will be revised pending the approval or disapproval of this grant. Elmer Erb Permanent Fund—Roger Moeller was appointed at the Board of Directors meeting to replace Tom Kirshner as a trustee to fulfill the term until 2008. A written report was filed. The trustees are looking at a more profitable investment program that will be implemented after reorganization is complete. Committee Reports: Annual Meeting—Mary Alice Graetzer thanked Allegheny Chapter for hosting the 2006 meeting. Forks of the Delaware Chapter will host 2007 in Bethlehem with the date to be announced. North Fork Chapter will host 2008. All chapters should consider hosting the Annual Meeting in turn. Contact Mary Alice for information. The board of directors passed a motion to change the meeting dates to the first or second week in April to lessen conflicts with other activities. Archaeology Month—Amanda Valko stated the planning is underway for 2006 with Jim Herbstritt handling the poster design following the point typology series. The committee is attempting to get the packets into member hands in a more timely fashion. An educational component is planned for the future to target the student audience. Awards—Catherine Spohn reported that nominations were received for the Archey and J. Alden Mason awards only. She asks that the Chapters encourage nominations for all the awards. New certificates and plaques will be produced for future awards and guidelines for a new award will be brought back to the next board of directors meeting. Awards were ready for the 2006 banquet. ESAF Representative—Amanda Valko reported that the call for papers for ESAF 2006 was out. The meeting will be held in Fitchburg, MA, November 8-12, 2006. See the SPA Newsletter or website for details. Jacob L.Grimm IV C-14 Award—No report. Announcement will be made at the banquet. Addendum: Cumberland Valley was awarded the C-14 matching funds at the awards banquet. PAC Representative –No report Publications—Bill Tippins reported that we are essentially back on schedule for publication of the Pennsylvania Archaeologist. He has manuscripts for the Fall 2006 issue but the need for manuscripts continue. He thanked his editorial staff, Verna Cowin, Paul Raber and Bill Johnson for helping to get the journal back on schedule. The SPA Newsletter funding has been provided for from the grant monies in the last few years. It was decided that email newsletters should be offer to anyone who wishes to receive their newsletter in that format. The newsletters are always available on the Society’s website and can be emailed to chapters upon request to be passed on in chapter newsletters. Site Survey—Noel Strattan reported that the total numbers were down considerably in 2005. Recorded new sites were 246 with a total statewide at 20,465. Noel has offered to keep track of sites reported by SPA Chapter members if recorders will be diligent in filling out that section of the site recording form. Collections and Curation Committee—Steve Warfel submitted a written report on the activities for 2005. Approximately 600 Discover and Preserve brochures were distributed on demand to members in Pennsylvania and New York. Contact Steve to obtain copies. Chapter Reports—A summary will be published in the Fall 200 SPA Newsletter. Reporting is not 100% currently but the last reports have been promised. It is a constitutional requirement that member chapters report their activities annually. The President requested a motion to ratify the actions of the Board of Directors for the past year. The motion was enter by Ken Burkett, seconded by Meli Diamanti, PASSED. Election to the Elmer Erb Trustees of two members, James Herbstritt and Albert Moore to six-year terms (2012) was completed with Ken Burkett’s motion to close the ballot and have the secretary cast the vote. Peg Sinclair seconded the motion. PASSED Deceased members for 2005-06 were remembered. They were Justin Burkett, Thomas Kirshner, James Swauger and Rain Vehik.
