75th Annual Meeting
Clarion, PA April 24, 2004 The 75th Annual Meeting of the Society for Pennsylvania was called to order at 8:35 a.m. by President Paul Raber. Attendance was taken with a roll call of Chapters and Officers. Chapters represented were: Allegheny, Forks of the Delaware, Ohio Valley, Somerset, Conejohela, John Shrader, and Westmoreland. A quorum was present. Minutes of the 74th Annual Meeting were accepted as distributed on a motion by Mark McConaughey, seconded by Amanda Valko. Treasurer’s report and projected budget as presented to the Board of Directors was approved on a motion by Mark McConaughey, seconded by Amanda Valko. Elmer Erb Permanent Fund gave a tentative report contingent upon reorganization activities and election of new trustees. Committee Reports; Annual Meeting—Mary Alice Graetzer reports that there is no host chapter for 2005. A possible volunteer is pending for 2006. Archaeology Month—Jim Herbstritt and Ed Dlutowski have completed the production of the 2005 poster. It is available to view at this time. IUP students will handle the mailing. Philip Perazio will produce the calendar of events. Awards—Donna George reports that the 2004 awards are ready and will be presented by committee member Noel Strattan at the banquet. ESAF Representative—Amanda Valko report on the 2004 ESAF meeting scheduled for November in Midland, Ontario, Canada. More information is available on the ESAF website. Jacob L. Grimm C-14 Award—Jim Herbstritt reports that there is one submission for the award. The recipient will be announced at the banquet. PAC Representative—Mark McConaughey reported that the PAC officers remain unchanged. The main PAC project is the Middle School Education project, which is managed by Renata Wolynec at Edinboro. Project Archaeology will be investigated by Brian Fritz on behalf of the Society. Publications—The new editor of The Pennsylvania Archaeologist will be Bill Tippins. Paul Raber and the publications committee will aid in the transfer of materials and set up of the editorial committee. The goal is to restore a regular journal production schedule to stop the loss of membership that the Society has experience with publication delays. The SPA Newsletter has been regular and on time. Chapters and individuals are encouraged to use the newsletter as an informational forum. Please adhere to the printed deadlines for each edition of the newsletter. Site Survey Report—Kurt Carr issued the annual report stating that the total number of recorded sites is 19,888, with new sites in 2003 totaling 449. Collections and Curation Committee—Stephen Warfel brought a carton of the brochures for distribution to chapters and members. The brochures are located in the bookroom. They have been well received and are due for an additional printing within the next year. Issues Committee—Kurt Carr reports that there has been no change in status of the GIS program at PennDot in relation to our memberships’ concerns about reveling site locations and identifying the recorder. There have been no problems reported as a result of the programs web based information thus far. Chapter Reports: A summary will be published in the Fall SPA Newsletter. President Paul Raber asked for a motion to ratify the actions of the Board of Directors of the Society for the past year. A motion was entered by Mark McConaughey, seconded by Amanda Valko and PASSED. Election of Elmer Erb Permanent Fund Trustees to terms of six years was held. Nominees for the positions were: Dr. Stanley Lantz and Mr. Charles Hannon. There being no additional nominations from the floor. A motion to accept the ballot as presented for election of the two nominees was enter by Kurt Carr and seconded by Kenneth Burkett.
