Meeting Forks of the Delaware Bartonsville, PA May 5, 2001 The Annual Meeting of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology was called to order by President William Johnson at 8:05 a.m. The President called the roll of officers and chapters. A quorum was present. Chapters represented at the meeting: Allegheny, Bald Eagle, Conamaugh, Ohio Valley, John Shrader, Somerset, Westmoreland and host chapter, Forks of the Delaware. Minutes of the 1999 Annual Meeting were accepted as distributed on a motion by Mark McConaughy, seconded by Verna Cowin. PASSED Treasurer's Report and 2001 Budget and Elmer Erb Permanent Fund Reports were accepted as presented to the board of directors on a motion by Edmund Dlutowski, seconded by Mark McConaughy. PASSED Committee Reports: Awards Committee reported that the awards are ready for presentation at the annual banquet. Archaeology Month Joe Baker reported that the poster is ready for October. The calendar will be prepared by Philip Perazio. Jim Herbstritt is responsible for having the City Island themed poster printed early and available to members in the bookroom. Chapters need to contact the BHP for additional supplies for promotional events. C-14 Committee Jim Herbstritt reports there are no applications for matching funds this year. A procedure for the C-14 application and testing process will be published in the SPA Newsletter and will in the future be placed on line. ESAF Representative Amanda Valko reported on the last ESAF meeting in November in St. Mary?s. MD. The 2002 meeting will be held in Thousand Islands NY on November 8-11, 2002. A meeting notice will be mailed and on the websites. PAC Representative Mark McConaughy reported that PAC?s elections resulted in Beverly Chiarulli as President, Dan Roberts as Vice President and Mark will continue as Secretary/Treasurer. Paul Raber reported that the PAC Publications Series is in Press with the next installment available soon. Publications Joe Baker reported the status of the Pennsylvania Archaeologist and future plans as outlined for the board of directors. The SPA Newsletter is on time. Please contribute articles and information and adhere to the published deadlines. Site Survey Noel Strattan presented the written report (attached) of 267 new sites reported in 2000. The bureau has promised to have numbers and site information turn around in a more timely fashion in the future. Noel also reminded the membership to continue to record sites as a means of protection of our Archaeological Resource and to determine the cultural resource impact of projects in Pennsylvania. Chapter Reports The Secretary only received ten reports.
Ed Dlutowski noted that the chapters should be reminded that the report is
a fulfillment of Constitutional requirements. A reminder will be sent
to delinquent chapters. A summary of the reports will be published in the
Fall SPA Newsletter Election of Officers: President elect Philip Perazio becomes the new President of the
Society Deceased members in 2000: Dr. Herbert Kraft and James
Pendergast members-at-large; Announcements: The Schuylkill Valley Chapter petitioned the board of directors to change their chapter name to the John Shrader Chapter #21 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology. The board approve the name change. The Westmoreland Chapter has made a memorial contribution to the Elmer Erb Permanent Fund in memory of member Judith Ann Bartlow. Mark McConaughy has asked that members contact their congressmen to protest the budgetary cuts at the Smithsonian which will eliminate a number of curation programs. In particular, the closure of the Center for Materials Research and Education which is a unique curation research facility. The SAA website has more information in the reorganization plans for the Smithsonian Museum system. Brian Fritz announced the debut of the Quemahoning Website which houses the homepages for the Western Pennsylvania SPA Chapters with links to report forms, Society information, meetings and events calendar. The site will maintain as much Society information as possible. In the future, Brian hopes to have all chapters able to maintain their own websites.
